Markus opens with a brief overview of OpenSolaris versions. However, the upgrade described will be from OpenSolaris 2008.11 to 2009.06. He reviews the two ways to upgrade, either with the 1) Graphical User Interface (GUI): Package Manager, or 2) CLU: Command Line.
The image packaging systems allows you to conduct the upgrade, which is easy to administer and package. "The technology that allows you to do that those easy upgrades of the complete operating system or just single packages or applications is IPS – image packaging system, which allows you to connect to a package repository over the network, download, install, and upgrade," said Markus. With this system, users can handle dependencies, provide rapid delivery of fixes, and upgrade and rollback with ZFS snapshots. He shows a screenshot of the improvements made to the image package manager.
Then, Markus proceeds with screen captures on how to upgrade with the graphical version with the package manager. With the upgrade and using the image package manager, you can view what is installed and software upgrades available. The time for actual installation will vary. Markus then shows how to boot with the new version.
Markus follows this by demonstrating how to conduct the OpenSolaris upgrade to 2009.06, using the command line.
