Sun Secure Global Desktop (SGD) Software 4.5 is now available. Enabling businesses to deploy applications on servers rather than clients, and with the delivery of secure, anywhere access to these applications and desktop systems, the SGD also provides system administrators with the ability to manage and deliver access to Windows, Linux, Solaris, AS/400 and Mainframe systems, all from a single PC.
Access to an SGD infrastructure can be done through a web browser. By simply navigating to a specific URL, users are able to securely access any application or fullscreen desktop required.
This latest release of the SGD introduces an innovative level of security when accessing data and applications with the new Secure Gateway, which allows users to move the SGD server out of the demilitarized zone (DMZ) and into the confines of the corporate firewall. It also adds new failover mechanisms that ensure consistent data availability, enhances device mapping, making it even easier to configure devices for large deployments, and adds native support for Novell eDirectory services.
New Features
- SGD Secure Gateway: Securely traverse the DMZ with this new feature that enables the SGD server array to remain on the internal corporate network. This provides the highest level of security assurance by keeping any user data inside the corporate firewall, while leveraging a single secure port for all external authentication and communications.
- Automated Primary Failover: Providing an efficient means to maintain array integrity, administrators can now pre-select a secondary server to automatically promote itself if a primary server fails.
- Application-Level device configuration: Policies for device configuration such as printing or client-drive mapping can now be assigned to applications in addition to individuals and groups.
- Support for Novell eDirectory Server: Adding to the supported list of directory servers, SGD now supports Novell eDirectory server.
- Added German Language support: SGD Software is now localized in the German language, making it the seventh localized language. Other primary localizations include Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, French, and English.
Licensing
Now available in both perpetual and subscription license offerings, SGD 4.5 provides a choice for customers interested in purchasing this security software. In addition to the standard perpetual license, Sun SGD Software subscription pricing allows companies to pay an annually recurring fee that includes support and a right to use the software. This is ideal for organizations needing to shift from a CAPEX model to an OPEX model.
There is also a new discounted license offered for existing VDI customers. The new discounted part number for the Sun SGD Software "combo" license is designed only for existing Sun VDI Software customers who would like to purchase an unrestricted license of SGD.
