Even during the peak loads of the semester’s first week...We had great performance and no downtime.

Sun helps University of Central Florida (UCF) solve many challenges for increasing throughput and storage capacity.

UCF turned to Sun Solutions because it needed to implement a scalable, reliable storage area network. However, it also needed to increase computing power for back-end database systems, improve efficiency and cost effectiveness of application servers, and deploy more cost-effective storage for the university's disaster-recovery environment.

The UCF solution included the deployment of a Sun StorageTek 9990V System. This functioned as a high-performance SAN. Interestingly, they were able to replace 12 Dell machines with only three Sun Fire X4600 M2 servers. Then, they refreshed 10 legacy Sun machines with the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5220 servers that boosted performance and saved on power and cooling requirements. To provide an extra boost, UCF's disaster recovery strategy was supported by three Sun StorageTek 2540 SAS arrays with a total capacity of 21 TB and managed by Sun StorageTek Common Array Manager software.

Sun's solution provided UCF with a fast operation and high reliability, with an overall improvement in performance. "Even during the peak loads of the semester’s first week, when many students are adding and dropping classes, everything moved smoothly. We had great performance and no downtime," said Robert Yanckello, Chief Technology Officer, University of Central Florida.

Yanckello explained the systems were easy to manage and enjoyed doing business with Sun. "The Sun StorageTek 9990V system is very reliable and we are very happy with it. The system offers a fully redundant design with much improved performance and features to support our IT needs," said Yanckello.
