SL3000 connects to mainframe and open systems.

The Sun StorageTek SL3000 Tape Library now offers the Access Expansion Module (AEM) as an option for customers needing higher availability and scalability.

High Availability

The AEM provides users with the ability to non-disruptively service a downed robot in the SL3000 library for increased availability of the library, which is especially important for customers requiring no downtime in their operations. Utilizing the AEM to service a downed robot allows the library to continue operating while the robot is serviced. This feature is unique to the SL3000 and is not matched by any competitive offerings.

Scalability

This new option also has 234 CAP slots for bulk load and unload of media. The bulk-load feature allows for increased scalability for customers doing large amounts of imports and exports.

Supported Platforms

  • Mainframe (HSC 6.1 and above)
  • Open Systems (ACSLS 7.3 and above, SMC-3 Command Set)

Supported Operating Systems

Operating system support is a function of the supported host applications and each application is supported on different operating systems. The following operating systems will be supported in some capacity:

  • zOS
  • Solaris
  • UNIX
  • Linux
  • Windows

Supported Sun Enterprise and Application Software

  • HSC 6.1+
  • ACSLS 7.3+
  • VSM4e, VSM4, and VSM5 (VTCS and VTSS)
  • VTL Value, VTL+, VTL Enterprise
  • SAM-FS

While all of the above will support the AEM module, the bulk load and unload feature may not work with SAM-FS, Sun reports. ACSLS 7.3 will allow for full utilization of the bulk load feature, but unloads are limited to 42 cartridges at a time. There are no known limitations of the bulk load / unload feature when utilizing HSC.

Key Advantages with SL3000

The SL3000 is a modular library so no PTPs are needed for growth. It only requires front/back access so the SL3000 service area is small. This midrange storage system connects to mainframe and open systems. It offers cartridge slot scalability and capacity on demand for easy growth. The SL3000 also has RealTime Growth capability, which allows customers to grow non-disruptively. There are high availability advantages as well. The SL3000 has full 2N power for the robot and offers redundant robots as an option.
