In a three-part screencast, blogger Markus Weber has put together a presentation on the Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) that deals with Installation (Part 1);
Configuration (Part 2); and Usage (Part 3.
The 14-minute plus Part 1 provides an overview and then a demo of installation and configuration, followed by a section on getting started/next steps. His screencast is amply illustrated with screenshots and code samples. In Part 1, Weber goes through the process of installing storage, then VirtualBox and then moves to installation of the VDI core.
In Part 2, Configuration, a 21-plus minute-long presentation, Weber promises to demonstrate the ease with which one can configure LDAP integration, desktop providers, and pools of desktops in VDI 3. He begins with a login to the VDI administration GUI and creation of an admin user.
Weber's next step involves the addition of a VirtualBox desktop provider. He then creates a variety of desktop pools, illustrating the feature of automatic cloning. He shows how, in a matter of minutes, several desktops can be cloned with little effort, using ZFS as the storage server.
In Part 3, which runs a little over 14 minutes, Weber deals with how one can use Sun VDI 3 and how users can access the machines (Sun Ray, Sun Secure Global Desktop, Remote Desktop Connector -- both Windows and Mac) in their virtual desktops.
