Sun Netra 1290 Server and Options
Upgrade Programs Available for Competitive and Sun Servers
May 27, 2009,
Volume 135, Issue 4

Replacement parts for customers who self-maintain these systems are currently available for purchase.

The Sun Netra 1290 Server and its options are being retired. The server has met the tier 1 minimum lifecycle of 3 1/2 years and is now considered a mature product. As time passes, it becomes increasingly more difficult to source older components required for the continued production of this system. Hence, Sun has scheduled a last order date for October 14, 2009; last ship date for April 14, 2010; and end of service life for April 14, 2015.

There are no direct or easily substituted replacements for the Sun Netra 1290 server, which utilizes the UltraSPARC IV+ processors, Sun reports. It is recommended that customers give consideration to the Sun Netra T5440. It is based upon the UltraSPARC T2 Plus and is a 4RU Netra server. The Sun Netra X4450 - 4RU x64 server - should also be considered as a potential replacement product.

Upgrade programs have been developed for customers and are available for both competitive systems and Sun servers. Visit the Sun web site for more details.

Replacement parts for customers who self-maintain Netra 1290 servers are available for purchase. These spares will be available for purchase until April 14, 2015, or until stock is depleted, Sun advises. All replacement spares for these systems will reach their end of life (EOL) on or before the date just listed.

In regards to options, most of them specific to the Sun Netra 1290 server are available for order but do also have a last order date of October 14, 2009, Sun says. Following this date, it may be possible to obtain field replaceable units (FRUs) from Sun's spares organization. The company does report that there are some options (memory, tape drive, and rack kits) that are being used in other shipping platforms so they will still be available and EOL'd at a later date.
