Sun Storage 6540 Controller Modules with 8 GB and 16 GB of Cache
Next-generation 6580 and 6780 Controller Modules Recommended Replacements
May 27, 2009,
Volume 135, Issue 4

The Sun Storage 6540 controller modules with 8 GB and 16 GB of cache have reached their end of life (EOL); however, the Sun Storage 6540 controller modules with 4 GB of cache will still be available. The last order date is set for July 17, 2009; last ship date for October 16, 2009; and end of service life for October 16, 2014.

The replacement products for these retiring solutions are the next-generation 6580 and 6780 controller modules:

  • XTA6580R11D4EA2-08: Sun Storage 6580 Controller Module with 8 GB cache and 8 4 Gb/s FC Host Ports - Rack Ready

  • XTA6780R11D4EA2-08: Sun Storage 6780 Controller Module with 8 GB cache and 8 4 Gb/s FC Host Ports - Rack Ready

  • XTA6780R11Q4SA2-16: Sun Storage 6780 Controller Module with 16 GB cache and 16 4 Gb/s FC Host Ports - Rack Ready

For data migration issues, customer can utilize the Sun Host Based Data Migration Service for open and mainframe systems.

Customers can protect their investment in legacy equipment through the Customer Loyalty and Investment Protection Program (CLIPP), which offers three different options:

IBB/UAP Trade-In Program

Trade-ins are available through the IBB/UAP program. Customers can trade-in 6000 line or non-Sun storage systems for new Sun Storage systems and receive a trade in allowance. Sun will handle the disposition of older assets for customers at no charge. The array being traded-in must be owned by, used by, and in the possession of the customer at least (90) days prior to trading-in. To qualify for the trade-in allowance, the customer must return within 90 days, a fully functional system. If trade-in is not returned within 90 days, Sun may bill back and the customer will agree to pay promptly the full amount of the trade-in allowance.

Redeployment of Legacy Tray Support

Data In Place Migration (DIPM) allows customers to re-deploy legacy trays behind newer controllers without the need to migrate data over the network. By retaining the majority of the hardware, costly migration expenses are eliminated reducing storage TCO.

Transfer of Premium Feature Licenses

To encourage customers to continue purchasing new array technologies from Sun, Sun offers an upgrade program that allows customers to transfer licenses from an older system to a newer system for just $750 per license (US list.) The old license / premium feature must be retired from the legacy array and the customer must fill out the Certificate of Destruction on the transferred feature(s) for the legacy array. The legacy array can still be deployed without the usage of the "transferred" premium features.

Specific details on these programs can be obtained from a Sun representative.
