Sun and Fujifilm are committed to high-performance computing and archival storage

Sun has selected Fujifilm as its media development partner for the Sun StorageTek T10000B, which was the first tape drive to ship with one terabyte native capacity. The two companies will be collaborating on future developments of this platform.

"Sun's decision to work with Fujifilm underscores the commitment both companies have to tape research and development," said Norio Shibata, general manager, Recording Media Products Division, FUJIFILM Corporation. "Sun and Fujifilm are committed to high-performance computing and archival storage and continue to invest in tape technology to deliver the best solutions for today's data centers."

Currently, the Sun StorageTek T10000B Tape Drive offers customers:

  • 1 TB native capacity and 120 MB/sec throughput drive datacenter efficiencies
  • Built in encryption technology
  • Supports FICON and Fibre Channel using the same hardware
  • Investment protection with T10000 media re-use and broad compatibility
  • Supports 24x7 business operations, minimizing risk

An eWeek article notes that the T10000b claims a bit error rate that is orders of magnitude better than LTO tape and hard disk drives, and Sun has addressed tape wind issues by locking the hub when the cartridge is out of the drive to protect the edges of the tape, among other features designed to enhance stability.

Tom Wultich, Sun's group manager of tape, said Sun achieves its bit error rate in part by employing 32 channels instead of 16, so it takes fewer passes and lower speeds to fill the tape.

"The Sun StorageTek T10000 tape drive enables us to utilize our library as an online storage resource, delivering thousands of very large files to our customers per month," said Mark Lemmons, Chief Technology Officer, Thought Equity Motion, Inc. "It gives us the throughput and scalable capacity we need to support our expanding content archive and meet the growing demand for our services."
