Sun offers a complete desktop-to-datacenter virtualization product portfolio.

Eduardo Pelegri-Llopart writing for The Aquarium provides a brief xVM status update on Sun's virtualization solutions, including VirtualBox, xVM Server, xVM Ops Center, Logical Domains and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, and how they interrelate.

VirtualBox

Defined, it is a Type 2 or hosted virtual machine (VM) with a very fast release cycle. It regularly adds features and performance updates along with bug fixes. Latest release is VirtualBox 2.2.2

xVM Server

This is a bare-metal hypervisor, considered a Type 1 or native VM. It is based on the Xen Project.

xVM Ops Center

Sun xVM Ops Center 2.1 is the latest release for Sun's unified systems management tool that provides management and monitoring of physical and virtual assets, provisioning, patch automation, IT compliance, and now offers power and gear monitoring.

Logical Domains (LDoms)

Group system resources into logical groups inexpensively with this built-in vituralization technology for Sun's CMT systems. To differentiate between LDoms and Solaris Zones, and determine when to use which one, see Bob Netherton\'s September 23, 2008, blog entry.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

A VDI is a layered software solution with three fundamental components: a hypervisor, a broker, and client devices. The Sun xVM VDI 3.0 consists of three functional layers: the virtualization layer, the session management layer, and the desktop access layer. Pelegri-Llopart says it is like Sun Ray meeting VirtualBox.
