ZFS Compression Saves Space, Improves Performance

Counterintuitive though it may be, Brian Leonard describes why turning on ZFS compression saves space while also improving performance. "This is because the time it takes to compress and decompress the data is quicker than the time it takes to read and write the uncompressed data to disk (at least on newer laptops with multi-core chips)," he states. See his example for a more detailed explanation.

Integration of Logical Domains (LDoms) and ZFS

Orgad Kimchi takes on the task of demonstrating the integration of Logical Domains (LDoms) and ZFS. He goes through the process of downloading and installing LDoms Manager and Solaris Security Toolkit, creating default services, setting up the control domain, creating zpool, creating and starting a guest domain, creating new ZFS for the new guest, and creating and starting a second domain.

Oracle WebLogic Certified for LDoms

Oracle Weblogic Server 10gR3 (10.3) is certified for LDoms. "With this certification, Oracle will fully support customer installations that deploy the Oracle Weblogic Server 10.3 in an LDom partition," writes Daniel Powers. "This will allow multiple Oracle Weblogic instances to operate independently on a single Sun CoolThreads (CMT) Server in full hardware level isolation."

Directly Upgrade from Solaris 8 SPARC to Solaris 10 OS

Gerry Haskins explains why it is now possible to upgrade directly from the Solaris 8 OS for SPARC platforms to the latest Solaris 10 Update releases, such as Solaris 10 5/08 and Solaris 10 10/08. Now users can skip the interim upgrade to Solaris 9.

Solaris Operating System for x86 Installation Check Tool detects whether your x86 system is able to run the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS). Version 1.6 release is the latest version and it will load the Solaris 10 5/09 kernel instead of the Solaris 10 10/08 kernel. Plus, the driver database is updated with the new Solaris device drivers.
