Enterpise Library Software 7.0 eases installs

The Sun StorageTek Enterprise Library Software 7.0 (ELS) is covered in the white paper "Introducing ELS," which provides an overview of the ELS and its components. ELS 7.0 is a simplification of the mainframe software suite of products.

The elements of ELS 7.0 include Sun StorageTek Host Software Component (HSC), Sun StorageTek Storage Management Component (SMC, which includes the product F.K.A. StorageTek HTTP Server), and Sun StorageTek Virtual Tape Control Software, all available on a single tape with one FMID. This packaging reduces complexity when installing the product.

The following is is a brief highlight of what is included within this release:

  • Improved installation/product integration
  • Improved ease-of-use, parameter pre-validation
  • Improved CDS recovery
  • CDRT integration and enhancements
  • Integrated vault function support
  • Integrated, task-oriented documentation
  • MVC mount changes
  • Improved migration control
  • Enhanced Clustered VTSS
  • Cross Tapeplex replication (Electronic Export/Import)

The ELS 7.0 requires an installation license charge (ILC) as well as a monthly maintenance charge (MMC). This will be required for each CPU/server, or 1 license is required per physical CPU.

Software support is available through Sun Software Service Plans. Sun recommends upgrading to a Premium Software Service support plan.

Users of ELS 6.1 and 6.2 can upgrade directly to ELS 7.0 without the use of CDS reformat. Since the enhanced clustered VTSS or the electronic export/import functions are not supported in ELS 6.2 or below, users must upgrade to ELS 7.0 to use them.

The discount for multiple CPU/serial serial number previously available on ELS 6.2 and below is not available on ELS 7.0, but the ILC has been reduced in order to account for multiple CPU discounts. In addition, customers with 15 or more CPU/servers within their enterprise per Geo will be offered a single part number. This has been requested by large users in order to reduce their billing administration.

In all probability, this is the last release on which software is provided on CD/9840/9940. Future releases will likely be standardized on CD, which it would be good to inform customers about.
