The Solaris 9 Operating System has reached its end of life (EOL) as Sun announced that the last order date for this Unix version will be July 31, 2009. Consequently, the last ship date will be October 30 of this year and end of service life on the same day just five years later (October 30, 2014).

EOL Support

Each Solaris release is supported for five years after it stops shipping, utilizing a two-phase support program. During the first phase, which lasts two years and is referred to as "Vintage Support Phase I", all support programs continue just as if the product were shipping. The only difference is that new requests for enhancement, or RFEs, are not accepted. Two years after end-of-ship, the second phase (called "Vintage Support Phase II") begins and lasts for the following three years. During this phase, all support operations continue, but new patches are only available on a "time and materials" basis. Solaris 9 Containers

Users of the Solaris 9 OS should know that an existing Solaris 9 environment can be virtualized to run in a container under Solaris 10. Solaris 9 Containers need to be downloaded in order to do this.

Sun also makes mention that Solaris 9 OS part numbers may be replaced by Solaris 10 part numbers.

Solaris Application Guarantee

Sun offers investment protection for its customers as they upgrade. Through the Solaris Application Guarantee program, Sun guarantees, at no cost, that existing applications will run without modification on the Solaris 10. The Solaris Application Guarantee reflects the confidence Sun has in the compatibility of applications from one release of Solaris to the next and is designed to make requalification -- let alone porting -- a thing of the past. Sun also makes it easy to develop and deploy on Solaris running on both 32/64-bit processor platforms: SPARC and x86/x64.

Solaris 10 Global Migration Program

The Solaris 10 Global Migration Program makes moving from earlier Solaris releases, or from non-Solaris operating systems, easy. In conjunction with Sun global migration services partners, the program delivers services for a successful migration on time and on budget.

Upgrading

Customers with a valid SunSpectrum support contract for a Sun system or a Sun Software Support contract for Solaris are entitled to receive the Solaris 10 OS and any associated updates.

Because Solaris 10 comes with a free RTU license for end users for all systems, Solaris 9 customers that have or don't have support contracts, can obtain and deploy Solaris 10 freely. Such customers may also run Solaris 9 Containers as an alternative means of continuing to run their Solaris 9 applications.

Installing Old Software on New Systems

Solaris licensing policy states that customers buying a new system from Sun or an authorized reseller may install any version of Solaris currently commercially offered by Sun. After the last ship date of Solaris 9, all new systems from Sun will come with Solaris 10 and/or OpenSolaris.
