The "Innovating at Sun" episode, "RESTing on the Cloud with Open APIs" was hosted by Hal Stern with guest Tim Bray, Sun Distinguished Engineer and Director of Web Technologies. Together they discussed the topic of open APIs and the Sun Cloud.
With growing popularity of cloud computing, Sun will be rolling out a cloud offering that is well-integrated compared with other designs out there, according to Bray. Sun presents the concept of a virtual datacenter with Containers etc. to make cloud computing more manageable. In addition, a clear, clean API is important for Sun to provide, as explained by Bray. Listen to find out why Sun is open sourcing its APIs, and as Bray said, "the world is unfolding and it's a fun time to be in this business."
Bray and Stern discussed the three basic types of cloud offerings being:
- The Infrastructure that provides Hardware
- The Platform that acts as a server, such as Databases
- The deliverable of Software as a Service
By taking cloud computing to the next level of the "virtual datacenter," Bray emphasized the importance of having open APIs. He talked about building a virtual datacenter. The question, why do you need APIs, is answered by Tim because, for the important high-end "stuff," you want the flexibility.
Bray talked about the elasticity of the cloud and how makes it very appealing. Here users can handle the computing as the need arises. Agility is the magic word. Cloud computing is more than lower cost control. According to Bray, it is about being able to turn the knob up or down as you need to on services.
