"There were a few problems in the 2.2[.0] release which we have now rectified in this new maintenance release," commented a Sun blogger. "It is available from the VirtualBox Downloads page and works well with Ubuntu 9.04."
eWeek did have an opportunity to test the major release of VirtualBox 2.2. Cameron Sturdevant commented, "Sun Microsystems' no-cost xVM VirtualBox, which enables guest virtual machines to run on a desktop computer, now offers support for Open Virtualization Format, host-only networking that broadens how virtual machines communicate, folder sharing, and OpenGL and 3D graphics support. With these new features, xVM VirtualBox 2.2 is an even more compelling alternative to the $189 VMware Workstation."
VirtualBox is a general-purpose full virtualizer for x86 hardware. Targeted at server, desktop and embedded use, it is now the only professional-quality virtualization solution that is also open source. VirtualBox software has been rapidly growing in popularity, surpassing 11 million downloads worldwide, 3.5 million registrations since October 2007, with in excess of 25,000 downloads a day. VirtualBox software is a 50 megabyte download and installs in less than five minutes.
