Solaris 10 5/09 Released
Focused on Enhancing Virtualization, Security and Network Communications

Volume 135, Issue 1

New features in Solaris 10 are based on real-world input from Sun's customers and the OpenSolaris community.

Solaris 10 5/09 is the seventh update of this Sun Unix operating system since it was released in 2005. Download the latest update and get enhancements to:

  • Solaris Containers: including the ability to leverage ZFS filesystem cloning as the basis for container cloning to provide significant speed and efficiency improvements

  • Tighter integration with Internet Protocol Security (IPsec): namely with Solaris Service Manager, which allows simplified management of overall security functions. IPsec is also now usable as the interconnect for Solaris Cluster, to manage fast, secure failover of session information among nodes of a cluster.

  • Upgraded Logical Domains (LDoms): including virtual disk updates to streamline performance and extended VTOC (virtual table of contents) support for very large files, as well as VNET and VSW support for jumbo frames

  • Greater optimization for Intel’s new Xeon 5500 processors, including Intel's Hyper-Threading ~ the upgraded multi-threading capabilities; Turbo Boost ~ speed-ramping technologies; and "QuickPath" ~ chip-to-chip interconnect.

  • Power Aware Dispatcher: automatically monitors and optimizes systems to maximize performance while minimizing power consumption. When used in conjunction with Intel's new Deep C-States, it can reduce power consumed by idle processing cores.

  • SSH performance enhancements on CMT systems, such as the ability to leverage hardware crypto acceleration on UltraSPARC T2-based systems

  • Sun Validation Test Suite (VTS) updates to support diagnostics of new Sun systems

In the PDF publication "Solaris 10 5/09 What\'s New," Joerg Moellenkamp sifts out some of the more interesting considerations of this release in his blog:

System Resources Enhancement

  • Support Added for Using ZFS Clones When Cloning a Zone
  • zoneadm attach -b Option so you can back out certain patches from update on attach

System Administration Enhancements

  • SMF Services for IPsec, which is now managed by SMF services

Security Enhancement

  • NAT-Traversal for IPsec Key Management Developers
  • Stronger Algorithms for IPsec. Three larger Diffie-Hellman integer-modulus groups (2048-bit, 3072-bit, and 4096-bit) as well as SHA2 including sha256, sha384, and sha512? SHA-2 using HMAC.
  • SunSSH With OpenSSL PKCS#11 Engine Support

Device Management Enhancements

  • x86: T-State Support for Intel Based Processors

System Performance Enhancements

  • Large Segment Offload Support for Intel PCI Express 10Gb NIC Driver
  • Solaris Power Aware Dispatcher and Deep C-State Support

Developer Tools Enhancements

  • SunVTS 7.0 Patch Set 5
  • x86: CPU Performance Counter Updates for Intel Processors
  • SUNWpatchutils Tool

Driver Enhancements

  • hermon Driver
  • iSCSI Target - upgraded and several performance, scalability, interoperability, and reliability improvements. Note, it's not the COMSTAR target.
  • x86: NetXen 10-GigE Device Driver
  • Intel ICH10 and Hartwell NIC Support in E1000g Driver
  • xge Driver Can Enable Multiple Receive Rings and MSI-X

Other Enhancements

  • New Locale Support for Kazakhstan and Ukraine
  • SPARC: Fp-scrubber Daemon

Commenting on the new release, and more specifically the cloning capabilities in the ZFS file system by Solaris Containers, Solaris Marketing Group Manager Larry Wake told eWeek\'s Jeffrey Burt:

"You can create a new Web server in seconds. For us, if we know that everything [in the clones] is going to be the same, why would we want to save it to disk twice? ... The speed and efficiency is a very big thing [to Solaris users]."
