With the continued increase in capacity being produced by disk drive manufacturers within the same form factor, 73 GB disk drives have fallen to the low end of available capacities. Demand for these particular disk drives also has fallen, making it economically impractical for manufacturers to continue producing such products. Therefore, Sun is retiring the following two products:
73 GB, 10,000 RPM, 2.5 inch SAS disk drives for UltraSPARC T2 and T2 Plus chip multithreading (CMT) servers
Last order date will be July 17, 2009, with the last ship date set for October 16, 2009, and end of service life date for October 15, 2014.
Sun recommends that customers select the 146 GB, 10,000 RPM, 2.5 inch SAS disk drive as a replacement. It provides twice the capacity at a very small premium in price, the company reports.
Customers should be aware that at this time there are no plans to retire the 73 GB, 15K RPM, 2.5 inch SAS disk drives or the 73 GB, 10K disk drives used by the SPARC CMT Blade servers.
73GB disk drive options on Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000, M5000, M8000, and M9000 servers
Retirement dates are the similar to the ones listed above: last order date is July 17, 2009; last ship date is October 16, 2009; however the end of service life date is set for October 16, 2014.
The replacement product in this case also is the 146 GB, 10,000 RPM, 2.5 inch SAS disk drive X-option and Assemble-to-order (ATO) option.
