Sun 10 GBe in Blades kinder to the bottom line than HP

Looking to save money on IT? Joerg Moellenkamp has found a way in adding up the respective costs of HP vs. Sun 10GBit/s in Blades. The difference is pretty striking.

Moellenkamp's calculations on the HP package take into account 10 GBe NIC per blade (based on 10 blades) (HP NC532m 10 GbE BL-c), a XFP (HP SR XFP Option Kit 443756-B21) and the switch itself (HP 10Gb Ethernet BL-c Switch 445860-B21). Cost of the switch: $12,199; cost of each XFP: $1,399 and for 10 blades you need the NIC for $699 each. Short calculation: List price of $20,588. The calculation assumed full-size blades in an HP c7000 shelf.

Sun's costs for a comparable setup using the Sun Blade 6000 Virtualized Multi-Fabric 10GbE Network Express Module: $4,999.00 for the module. For some blades you need the Sun Blade Passthru FEM, figuring one per blade. One FEM costs $75. You need two Sun 10 Gigabit Ethernet SFP+ Short Reach Pluggable Transceivers @$250 per transceiver. Short calculation: $6249. On top you get one additional GBe-Interface per blade and SAS networking.

"That´s quite a large difference," Moellenkamp concludes.
