A posting in The Aquarium ("nothing to do with fish but everything to do with Open Source Java EE, XML, SOA...and more") alerts readers to the potentially important role in store for GlassFish Communications Server as a tool in the Telco industry. The blogger, pelegri, predicts that "SailFin will play a significant role in accelerating the adoption of the converged (SIP+HTTP) web, pointing readers to an article in the January 2009 Ericsson Review to support the contention.
Ericsson's head of R&D Management, Common Technologies -- Business Unit Multimedia, Bo Andren, writes in the review about the integration of a Sun GlassFish Communications Server in an application server layer, where it delivers the features required to align the operation, administration, maintenance and provisioning of the server itself and applications using the server.
Andren adds, "Continuous changes in business environments as well as the convergence of media, entertainment, and communication businesses and solutions require a new approach to system design, pricing, product packaging, deployment, and support."
The blog suggests that the Telco industry may have that "new approach" in open source. "Traditionally the Telco industry has addressed their extreme requirements (scalability, reliability, manageability) through proprietary software, but this is very expensive and, instead, several of them (Ericsson and Sun included) created the OpenSAF (member list) Foundation to create an Open-Source middleware base platform they can use. And the platform is based on Java EE 5 and uses SailFin, " pelegri writes.
Pelegri also cites a blog entry by Sreeram Duvur, Designing scalable, reliable, and efficient systems, who refers to the Andren article as well, pointing out, "It describes how they built a full system for delivering continuous services using only open source components. Notable how they depend on Java EE and GlassFish Communications Server in the middleware tier. They used Open SAF and Linux clustering at the lower levels."
