Sun has announced new configuration options for its Infinite Archive System (IAS), a fully integrated solution that allows customers to manage huge amounts of unstructured, and/or structured static data at significant savings over disk-only based archive systems. With this option, customers will find Sun StorageTek QFS and SAM-FS software, running on the robust Solaris Operating System, integrated into IAS, enabling customers to use automated policy-based management.
The IAS is a third generation solution, formerly known as the Content Infrastructure System (CIS), built to factory production standards, with all the experience of multiple SAM-QFS deployments encapsulated, so ordering an IAS means you are getting a state of the art system with all the wrinkles removed, at a great price.
IAS, which is built on Solaris 10U5 with Sun Cluster 3.2 for high availability and
fault tolerance in the most demanding environments, will migrate data dynamically to the most efficient type of storage based upon the business needs of the customer as part of an overall information lifecycle management process.
These pre-engineered systems enable customers to quickly and easily determine their desired configuration and order the solution they want. The pre-configured and tested solutions provide for simplified installation and quick time to production, allowing customers to quickly realize a return on their investment.
The Managed Service offering is provided by Sun's Remote Operations Management team and consists of either monitoring or turn-key management of the IAS appliance. The service provides oversight of the IAS application, as well as the underlying hardware and OS.
The huge scalability of this offering, up to multiple PB of online/nearline, and up to
hundreds of petabytes of offline capacity, means the customer can be sure of finding the right system for the right price to meet their needs.
The offering also delivers intelligent data management across storage tiers with SAM-QFS software for hierarchical storage management of archive data, which results in cost savings of 50% or more compared to competitive disk-only archival and data repository systems.
The IAS compromises the following:
- Choice of Value Base with Clustered Sun X4200 or Midrange Base with Clustered T5220 CMT systems.
- Sun StorageTek 2500 disk arrays, with SAS and/or SATA drives
- Optional Sun StorageTek SL500 tape bundle with FC LTO4 drives
Two implementation services are available. The first is a standard, fixed-price offering for basic IAS implementations including integration within the customer's environment as well as transfer of information (training) around archive best practices.
The second is a custom implementation service which may be provided for additional solution tailoring, particularly for archive solutions making use of large Sun libraries and tape technology already in the customer's data center. Optional implementation services are also available for NT or NFS migrations.
