Chander Kant, CEO Zmanda demonstrated at the CommunityOne Event in New York how to backup a MySQL database to Sun's Clouds, using Zmanda ZRM via WebDAV API for integration. Watch the "Zmanda Open Source Backup Demo" for a visual overview on how to perform a typical backup to a Sun's Cloud, featuring MySQL database example. After the demonstration is a presentation of the three main benefits of multi-cloud management platforms by Rightscale's CEO, Michael Crandell.

According to Kant, backup is more than just a political statement because businesses want to have control over their data for set time. "By storing data on an open cloud format you will be able to do that regardless of how the technology changes underneath you," said Kant.
As Cloud specialists, Zmanda executes backups to the Clouds, the two ways are: backup "to" the Cloud or backup "of" the Cloud. The demonstration focused on the task of Backup "to" Sun Cloud.
Organizations are using these backup features to safeguard their servers and, for example, a MySQL database to protect the data. For the demo, Kant explained the basic features of the backup management system, which allows users to set when, where and how they want to backup the data.
He defined the types of file systems that may be chosen for backup, such as Solaris; databases such as MySQL, and other applications. When users choose the Sun Cloud to perform their backup, they may review reports and easily identify backup items.
Kant emphasized the convenience of Sun Cloud backup; for recovery, all users need are Internet access and a browser. "So ultimately," said Kant, "the goal here is that you are able to recover your data from any time anywhere."
The Sun presenters expressed enthusiasm about growing the ecosystem of partners and providers that will be working with Sun Clouds.

Michael Crandell, CEO, Rightscale Presentation
Sun's Cloud Partner, Rightscale's CEO explained the three main benefits of multi-cloud management platforms and how they aim to help developers control the solutions that they are building. These web-based environments allow companies to easily manage, monitor, and automate their cloud servers, storage and other resources. Rightscale has predesigned server templates for common application scenarios that help companies transition quickly to the Sun Cloud.
"Our goals have really been since the beginning when we launched our free edition to provide three sources of benefits for developers," said Crandall. These benefits are automation, transparencies or openness, and portability and interoperability. Automation is the reduction of system administration tasks that may include auto scaling and fail over. The benefit of "transparencies" addresses the spirit of openness and allowing businesses to control the types of solutions that they are building. The final benefit of portability and interoperability approaches the tasks of moving applications and cloud deployments around to different environments.
Rightscale deploys their services to power a variety of projects, including web content delivered for the Olympics over mobile phones to enterprise grids and everything in between. Crandall expressed gratitude to Sun for their efforts regarding the Sun Clouds.
