The Solaris platform has been readied for Intel's new Xeon 5500 processor that was launched this week and Sun products with Nehalem's are expected to be launched April 14th.

Keynoting at the Open Source Business Conference, Jonathan Schwartz discussed cloud computing, which he contends is the future of business computing. Sun is formulating an alliance to create a code of best practices for cloud computing.

Altair has ported its next-generation CAE solver technology, Hyperworks, to the Solaris platform.

Impressive benchmarking results were turned in by the Sun Fire X4600 M2 in running VMware VMark. Sun Fire x4450 servers using Intel Xeon 7460 processors and GigaSpaces eXtreme Application Platform (XAP) also have new benchmark performance results. The new HPC systems reduce cabling by 84 percent, switches by 97 percent, and rack space by 75 percent, Sun reports.
