Volume 133, Issue 3

StarOffice and OpenOffice.org delivered a potential cost savings relative to Microsoft Office of 46 % or $885,000 USD per 1000 desktops over a three-year time period.

This Sun Whitepaper examines the potential cost savings of StarOffice 9 and OpenOffice.org over Microsoft Office 2007 by providing a direct cost comparison of an office suite deployment.

The following costs are analyzed in the paper:

  • licensing
  • hardware
  • operating system
  • document conversion
  • training

Although a number of open source TCO studies exist, most of them do not cover office suite costs. Therefore, this study focuses on examining the costs of StarOffice 9, OpenOffice.org, and Microsoft Office by analyzing an organization with 1,000 desktops with a typical number of documents and Microsoft Office macros.

According to the paper, the licensing for StarOffice when compared to Microsoft Office is only 20 percent of the cost. Although OpenOffice if free to use, there are other costs that need to be considered other than licensing.

The following three main cost areas are examined in this document:

  • IT Infrastructure Costs – these include licensing, hardware, operating system, application integration, document analysis costs

  • Costs of Training and Support, including help-desk costs

  • Migration and Installation Costs – these include installation and migration of an organization's Microsoft Office documents, templates and MS Office macros."

Interestingly, the whitepaper concluded a cost savings of 48 percent over Microsoft Office over a period of 3 years was concluded for StarOffice and OpenOffice.org.

In addition, key findings and overall costs were provided for licensing, maintenance, training, migration. Specifically, the paper said, "StarOffice and OpenOffice.org delivered a potential cost savings relative to Microsoft Office of 46 % or $885,000 USD per 1000 desktops over a three-year time period."

Note: This paper is meant to provide a framework for the evaluations of the benefits and costs of switching from MS Office to StarOffice or OpenOffice.org. Users should not use these case examples as absolute and apply their own organizational and environment needs to their own individual scenario to determine their costs.
