There is now a media kit for Sun Java Mobile Communication 1.0 that will enable users of leading edge phones to synchronize in real time over-the-air with calendar and contact data stored on Sun Communication Suite servers. This solution expands Sun's client spectrum from desktop and webtop to mobile devices. SyncML devices can be configured to accept push updates, and users can manually "pull" the updates from the server as well as send local changes back to the servers.
The media kit uses open standards (OMA), extends calendar, address book and task synchronization to mobile devices. It is compatible with any SyncML-supporting devices (e.g clients for Windows Mobile, Symbian, Palm OS). Furthermore, it is MD5 for encrypted authentication.
The benefit of these features is that they offer RIM-like service for the mass market, increasing utilization of data network for operators. It is available as an optional add-on component to Sun Java Communications Suite on a subscription basis.
Supported platforms for the solution include Solaris 9 and 10 on SPARC, x86 or x64 platforms, Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server 3, 4, 32- or 64-bit, Sun Applications Server 9.1, and Sun Java System Communications Suite 6.
Supported operating systems include Solaris 10 Operating Systems (SPARC and x86 Platform Editions), Solaris 9 Operating Systems (SPARC and x86 Platform Editions), Red Hat Linux 4 Enterprise Server and Advanced Server, and Red Hat Linux 3 Enterprise Server and Advanced Server.
Sun Java Mobile Communications 1 will work with Communications Suite 6 and above, Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.3, and Sun Java System Calendar Server 6.3.
At the moment, the software does not support email synchronization - only calendar
data and address book/contacts data. Users can synchronize updates made on their mobile devices with the data stored on the server, and vice-versa.
The documentation for the software is available on the Comms doc wiki, which is found at:
