Customers can save money on licensing fees with the new one dual-core SPARC64 VII processor for the Sun SPARC Enterprise M3000 server. This latest edition to the M3000 product category, the dual-core, single CPU system reduces the number of Oracle licenses required and allows for greater customer choice and flexibility in managing Oracle licensing costs.
The dual-core M3000 is available as a PTO configuration and costs the same as the 4GB (4x1GB) quad-core configuration since both systems contain the same amount of physical material, meaning all M3000 systems have the same number of cores. The only difference is that two of the cores in the dual-core system are permanently disabled.
The advantage with the dual-core processor over the quad-core one is that customers can save approximately $47,500 in Oracle licensing costs on the Oracle Enterprise Edition.
The SPARC64 VII processor is supported on the SPARC Enterprise M3000
server with minimum system XCP version 108x and Solaris 10 update 6. This OS is highly recommended for SPARC Enterprise servers using the dual-core and quad-core SPARC64 VII.
Sun does recommend that customers purchase Sun Services' Enterprise Installation Services (EIS). Although optional, this comprehensive installation and configuration service will ensure the system's optimization for stability and performance right from the start. It can help launch a new system quickly and smoothly, avoiding costly disruptions that could impact business and minimize interoperability problems in multi-vendor, heterogeneous environments. This further helps expedite the availability of new servers and speeds time to benefit.
