End of Life for Trusted Solaris 8 Software
Solaris 10 OS with Trusted Extensions Feature Recommended Replacement
February 16, 2009,
Volume 132, Issue 3

The Trusted Extensions feature in the Solaris 10 OS offers similar security technologies to that of Trusted Solaris 8 software

May 1, 2009 is the last order date for the Trusted Solaris 8 software as the 7/03 and 2/04 releases reach their end of life. The last ship date for the software is July 31, 2009, with the end of service life date set for the same day in the year 2014.

Following the standard support life cycle of 5 years from the last ship date of the software product, year 1 and 2 will provide full support and year 3 through 5 will provide limited support.

The suggested replacement product is the Solaris 10 OS which comes with Trusted Extensions. The Trusted Extensions feature in the Solaris 10 OS offers similar security technologies to that of Trusted Solaris 8 software, however the actual programming API is different than that of Trusted Solaris 8. ISVs and application developers will need to port their applications to use the new API provided by Solaris 10 and the Trusted Extensions feature. Sun reports that most applications written to work with Solaris 10 also will work when the Trusted Extensions feature is enabled.

The Solaris 10 11/06 OS has received Common Criteria certification against the following protection profiles:

  • Controlled Access Protection Profile (CAPP)
  • Role Based Access Control Protection Profile (RBACPP)
  • Labeled Security Protection Profile (LSPP)
  • All at Evaluation Assurance Level 4+ (EAL 4+)

The Solaris 10 5/08 release also has completed the Assurance Continuity process for CAPP and RBACPP at EAL 4+. Sun is expecting LSPP to be completed during the second half of 2009.
