Sun is offering its open source GlassFish application server and some new by-products as part of a newly named Sun GlassFish Portfolio that offers a flexible subscription-based pricing model based upon varying levels of service and support.
Starting at $999 per server, the GlassFish Portfolio includes the GlassFish Application Server, along with the following new components:
Sun GlassFish Web Stack
A complete and fully integrated LAMP stack designed for developers wanting a light-weight Web solution. The GlassFish Web Stack includes Tomcat, Memcached, Squid and Lighttpd with support for PHP, Ruby and the Java Platform.
Sun GlassFish Web Space Server
Based on Liferay Portal, the leading open source portal technology, helps companies simplify Web site development and build collaborative work spaces, including portals and social networking sites.
Sun GlassFish ESB
A lightweight, open source ESB platform for department-scale and enterprise SOA deployments that connects existing and new applications to deliver content and services to the Web.
Sun Enterprise Manager
For enterprise scale management and monitoring of the GlassFish Portfolio including SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) support.

Add-on to the Portfolio: GlassFish Communications Server
The Sun GlassFish Communications Server is a telecommunications-grade, open source foundation for converged multimedia applications. This solution is based on joint development with Ericsson in the open source Project SailFin and enables service providers to create and deliver innovative services like VOIP, instant messaging, IPTV, interactive gaming and other multimedia applications for a wide range of business and consumer devices.
It is now generally available as an add-on to the GlassFish Portfolio. Additional add-ons are also available.
Besides Ericsson, other third-party supporters for Project SailFin and Sun GlassFish Communications Server include Argela, CGI, Gintel, IP Gallery, Personeta, Telepo, and Tieto Enator.
MySQL and GlassFish
Kevin Schmidt, GlassFish Portfolio's product manager, said Sun is looking to offer the GlassFish Portfolio in a manner similar to the popular open source MySQL database, reported InformationWeek. "Our major direction with GlassFish is to align with MySQL," he said. The two will be offered as an integrated set, ready to run after download.
Both open source Sun solutions offer consistent pricing and subscription support models so customers can rest assured their open source deployments will be available when needed.
New Enterprise Customers and Service Providers
New GlassFish customers include: Medavie BlueCross, Pretium Telecom and TravelMuse.
Companies including GlassFish software as part of their solutions: Argela, CareSpark, CGI, Ericsson, Gintel, Hub City Media, ICEsoft Technologies, Inc., IPgallery, Personeta, Telepo, Tieto Enator and Yenlo.
