Safeway's Paul Rarey sat down with John Barco of Sun Identity Management Buzz TV recently to discuss the business benefits Safeway, a Fortune 100 retailer, has seen from implementing Sun Identity Management solutions. With annual sales of $42.3 billion in 2007 and over 200,000 employees in an extensive network of facilities, the needs for both efficient personnel management and for regulatory compliance were behind Safeway's implementation of Sun Identity Management, Rarey said.
Such regulatory issues as payment card industry (PCI) regulatory compliance and the ever more complex requirements brought about by Sarbanes-Oxley, along with attrition within individual stores as seasonal needs for personnel dictate, created forces in both the business optimization and compliance areas that necessitated an identity management solution.
Among the benefits to Safeway from having implemented Sun Identity Management solutions are the ability to deliver self-service HR information to employees. Without an automated system, delivery of this service would be impossible, given the demands on the system, Rarey said.
Further benefits include the ability of retail staff to provide identities within 15 minutes of a decision to hire someone, which speeds the onboarding process most helpfully; ability to meet regulatory compliance is possible with fewer personnel, especially as quarterly recertifications mandated under PCI and Sarbanes are concerned, Rarey added.
Process and data are the key points to master in beginning an identity management solution, Rarey contended. HR needs to know as soon as possible when new hires become part of the operation. Change points need to be identified and understood.
