An affordable midrange appliance, StorageTek VTL Plus 1.0 and the new StorageTek VTL Plus 2.0 lead in buffer capacity, configuration flexibility, and reliability.

The Sun StorageTek Virtual Tape Library Plus software features tape stacking, which allows the VTL user to consolidate multiple virtual tape volumes in one physical tape cartridge. An affordable midrange appliance, StorageTek VTL Plus 1.0 and the new StorageTek VTL Plus 2.0 lead in buffer capacity, configuration flexibility, and reliability. Sun Fire servers and the Solaris Operating System (Solaris OS) lock in data protection. Sun also offers full back-end physical tape integration.

How it Works

The StorageTek Virtual Tape Library Plus software helps to solve the problem of shrinking backup window due to too much data that is increasing daily. Too much data may slow one-tape-at-a-time transfers and cause backup failure delays. The StorageTek software also addresses the restore side which could use some acceleration, too.

The Basic Tape Stacking feature enables the VTL user to consolidate virtual tape volumes into one physical tape cartridge. Through this practice, the user gains a significantly higher utilization of physical cartridge space and reduces the number of mounts and dismounts of cartridges thus prolonging the life of the physical media and reducing cost of ownership.

Key Applications

  • Accelerated backup and restore
  • Disaster recovery
  • Remote office
  • Distributed data protection

About Basic Tape Stacking

Basic Tape stacking is the manual function of consolidating multiple virtual tape volumes on the VTL system and migrating these volumes onto one physical tape cartridge.

Other features are required to use physical tape stacking include: HBA(s). Basic tape stacking requires the PCI-x slot to be populated with an HBA(s) to provide a path to the physical tape devices in order to migrate the virtual tape volumes to the physical tape cartridge.

In order to activate a Basic Tape Stacking license, the VTL system must be at VTL Plus V2.0 with update 2 patch code in order for basic tape stacking license keys to be activated.
