Sun Data Protection Services Data Erasure (SDPS-DE) provides an on-site offering delivered by Sun-badged technicians that erases sensitive customer data from the hard disk drives installed in Servers and Arrays. The erasure technology conforms to DOD 5220-22M standards, ensuring non-recoverability of erased data including erasure of locked/hidden sectors such as remapped, DCO, HPA sectors.

With on-site data erasure the customer is in control of assets containing confidential customer or corporate data until all data has been eradicated from the hard disk drives, protecting the corporation from inadvertent data loss which can result in unwanted financial, legal and personal exposure and long term consequences to company reputation. This allows customers peace of mind that their data is safe and that they have policies and procedures in place to ensure compliance with government and industry data protection regulatory guidelines.

Hard disk drives are fully erased within the system cabinet allowing easy identification of fully erased systems for repurposing and a timely completion of the erasure engagement while also maintaining configurations for redeployment, donation or sale.

SDPS-DE provides a detailed erasure report identifying all assets erased by hard drive serial number. It also flags disk drives that were not erased due to hard disk drive errors. This detail provides an audit trail to prove regulatory compliance and ensure complete and successful erasure of confidential customer data. Protection from liability and peace of mind that customer data is protected and policies are in place to meet regulatory compliance guidelines.

Any of the following customer requirements for Data Erasure would require a Professional Service Data Eradication engagement. This would include:

• Data Erasure on Non Sun hardware.
• Data Erasure on any equipment on the PS Supported Equipment list
• Data Erasure that requires a long term PS contract in addition to Data Erasure (Consolidation, Migration, etc.)
• Data Erasure that requires a Statement of Work (Non-standard delivery requirements).
• Data Erasure of systems that have no access to power.
• Data Erasure on any Mainframe-attached system.
• Data Erasure requirement for an erasure standard greater than three pass DOD 5220-22M erasure standard.
• Data Erasure on more than 300 hard drives in a single engagement.

The Professional Services contact alias is: PS_Data_Eradication@sun.com. Systems erased under Sun Data Protection Services, Data Erasure do not require SunSpectrum coverage. SDPS Data Erasure can be performed on any Sun system at the customer site whether it is under a Sun Spectrum contract or not.

Both the revenue release and general availability dates were December 31, 2008, after which the service will be available worldwide. There are two pricing options available for SDPS Data Erasure service offering. SDPS-Data Erasure is sold as a per-incident service offering and is priced at one level for Sun customers who currently have a SunSpectrum contract and one level for customers who do not have a SunSpectrum contract. Pricing is per hard drive and is tiered pricing based on hard disk drive quantity. The higher the hard disk drive volume the lower the per hard disk drive price.
