Sun's CEO Address Speculation about Sun in the Marketplace

Sun has posted a video in which Jonathan Schwartz, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sun Microsystems, speaks directly to marketplace. Jonathan opens this brief video posted to Sun's news site by saying, "There has been a lot of speculation about Sun in the marketplace. I thought that I would use this video as a way to put some of that speculation to rest. I'd like to give folks an update on some of the changes we are making organizationally as well as how we see the market and some of the changes folks should expect from Sun as we go through our own redefinition and realignment."

Volume Distribution Pays Off for Sun (and Google, Microsoft, Verizon)

In this week's edition of Jonathan's Blog the subject has to do with the virtues of volume distribution and how it differs from and adds to the revenue from conventional foot traffic.

Schwartz observes that many of the users of Java runtime (60,000,000 runtimes distributed in October) are not even aware of it because it has become invisible, and the volume of its downloads and uses further promotes the use of the Java platform itself. He describes this phenomenon as a "virtuous cycle." Schwartz puts the number of Java runtimes installed on PCs around the world at around one billion, and each of these generates revenue for Sun.

Three Wins for Sun Consellation System and Lustre File System
Sandia National Laboratories, Forschungszentrum Jülich And RWTH Aachen University

Sun has just announced the selection of its Sun Constellation System at the Sandia National Laboratories, the Forschungszentrum Jülich, and RWTH Aachen University, where it will power the next-generation compute clusters at each institution. All three will implement the Lustre parallel file system as well. The extreme scalability and performance of the Sun Constellation System and Lustre will enable Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen University to hit a peak performance of more than 200 teraflops each in the first phase of deployment.

Wikimedia Selects Sun to Enhance Multimedia Experience for Expanding User-Base Worldwide
Need to Accommodate Explosive Growth of Rich Content

The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that operates Wikipedia and other free-content projects, announced that it has selected Sun to help it build a secure and scalable open source web infrastructure using Sun Fire x4500 and x4150 servers and Sun StorageTek storage arrays. The collaboration will enable Wikimedia to host ever-increasing volumes of rich media and video content and also support the collaborative development and testing of new Wikipedia content and applications by its global network of users.
