Combining the power of the Solaris 10 OS with ZFS, the Sun Storage J4400 array can streamline and improve backup and restore operations.

A BigAdmin guide was published that is an introduction to configuring the Sun Storage J4400 array as a disk cache for Sun StorageTek Enterprise Backup Software 7.4. In this article, readers are provided with an example of configuring the ZFS file system on the Solaris 10 OS and configuring StorageTek EBS 7.4 to utilize the Sun Storage J4400 array as disk cache. By using this 14 page PDF as a guide, rates of over 1 Tbyte backup throughput, per hour are what the author is hoping to help users achieve. The contents of the article are:

  • Configuring the Disks
  • Creating Zpools
  • Configuring ZFS
  • Installing StorageTek Enterprise Backup Software Options
  • Configuring the StorageTek Enterprise Backup Software Storage Node
  • Configuring Each ZFS File System as a Storage Device
  • Creating a Media Pool
  • Configuring Client Backups

The introduction states, "The Sun Storage J4400 array can deliver large storage capacity and remarkable throughput at a low price point making it an optimal nearline storage platform for backup and restore applications. Combining the power of the Solaris 10 OS with the data integrity and simplified administration of ZFS, the Sun Storage J4400 array can be an ideal candidate for streamlining and improving backup and restore operations."

The article goes on to explain how the Sun Storage J4400 array supports 24 SAS or SATA disks for a raw capacity of 7.2 Tbyte of SAS disk storage or 24 Tbyte of SATA disk storage. Figures are provided that show a StorageTek Enterprise Backup Software configuration using a Sun Storage J4400 array connected to a Sun server as disk cache. The default configuration in the example Sun Fire server allows up to four physical Gigabit Ethernet connections to be attached, acting as a StorageTek EBS storage node. The four connections can back up four separate subnets, or the connections can be aggregated into a single subnet for improved throughput using dladm(1M), as said in the introduction.
