Sun J4000 family: a valuable component in highly scalable, cost effective building blocks that helps create a flexible Open Storage infrastructure

Sun has announced SAS drives for Sun Storage J4200 and J4400 arrays, as well as new functionality and interoperability support for Sun Storage J4200, J4400, and J4500 arrays, along with the repricing of drives for Sun Storage J4200 and J4400 arrays.

The Storage J4000 family belongs to the Sun Systems portfolio whose core family values are to be open, innovative and provide breakthrough economics. Combined with Sun's industry leading servers, the new Sun J4000 family provides highly scalable, cost effective building blocks that helps create a flexible Open Storage infrastructure. With the planned addition of Flash technologies, users will be able to take advantage of a truly balanced solution. Customers can deploy the J4000 family in a wide variety of qualified operating environments such as Solaris, Red Hat Linux, Suse Linux or Windows.

Used in an Open Storage deployment, the J4000 arrays can reduce storage costs by up to 90%. And unlike traditional storage environments, Sun's Open Storage allows you to freely mix and match components, including the new J4000, in your computing infrastructures as your business needs change, repurposing and reusing hardware simply by adding new software to the server component.

The advanced RAID Feature of the Sun StorageTek SAS RAID HBA provides optimized performance, robustness and reliability; the Sun StorageTek SAS RAID HBA can deliver benefits typically reserved for the larger enterprise storage environments.

The OpenSolaris ZFS file system that is included with the J4000 arrays helps prevent data corruption and provides virtually unlimited snapshots to protect data.

The simplified management with OpenSolaris ZFS makes it easy to grow and shrink file system capacity without administrative intervention, reducing provisioning time by 50%. Solaris ZFS also significantly reduces cost and complexity by streamlining storage administration and allowing resources to be shared.

Online storage management, redundant hot-swappable components and automated path failover eliminate the danger of a single point of failure, resulting in 24/x7 availability and confidence that business-critical data will be online and accessible at all times.

Sun has repriced the SAS and SATA drives in J4200 and J4400 as shown below:

SAS:

  • 146GB 15K RPM
  • 300GB 15K RPM

SATA:

  • 500GB 7.2K RPM
  • 750GB 7.2K RPM
  • 1TB 7.2K RPM

A 400GB 10K RPM SAS drive is available for Sun Storage J4400 only, while a 450GB 15K RPM SAS drive is available for Sun Storage J4200 and J4400.

New J4200 and J4400 functionality support includes:
