Weekly Summary:

The big news this week was the launch of the quad-socket SPARC Enterprise T5440 server. Sun supported its performance claims with a number of benchmarks: SAP-SD (4 socket), world record Siebel performance, world record SPECjAppServer2004 performance, and the SPEC OMPL2001 4-Chip World Record .

Allan Packer posted a detailed review of the various Sun blogs that cover various aspects of the T5440.

This week Sun launched the M3000, a single socket server, powered by a quad-core SPARC64 VII processor and Solaris 10. The Sun SPARC Enterprise M-Series servers have scored a number of new wins.

Sun announced results for Q1 of FY09 and Jonathan Schwartz has posted a blog with his analysis of those results and the outlook for Sun.

The latest release of Solatis 10, ("update 6"), Solaris 10 10/08, is now available for download, as is the Sun Ray Software 4 10/08.

Enhancements to the Sun Blade 6000 line incude the Sun T6340 module, the Sun Blade 6000 Disk Module and the Sun Blade 6000 Multi-Fabric Network Express Module (NEM+).

Sun will be formally announcing its earning for FYQ1 on Thursday but has announced that it expects to post a loss and revenues of about $3B. Southeastern Asset Management has purchased additional shares of Sun to brings its ownership to to 21%.

Sun announced a Disk Blade two new server blades for the Sun Blade for the SB 6000 and an ATCA blade server, with two quad-core Xeon processors. The new T6340 server module, powered by two UltraSPARC T2 Plus processors, earned 4 new world performance records..
