New options for Sun Fire x4450 Server with Intel Xeon 7400 Series Processor

Sun has made standard configurations and processor options available for the Sun Fire x4450 Server with the Intel Xeon Processor 7400 series. These new processor options range from 4-core to 6-core and 65W to 130W. These new Sun Fire X4450 standard configurations and processor options based on Intel Xeon processor 7400 series replace the existing configurations and options based on Intel Xeon processor 7300 series.

The new Intel Xeon processor 7400 series have the following features:

  • Improved Performance: provides up to 40% gain in enterprise workloads

  • Better Energy Efficiency: produced with 45nm state-of-the-art technology to increase performance while remaining in the same power envelope, resulting in up to 54% higher performance/watt

  • Higher Compute Density: the Sun Fire X4450 now supports up to 24 processing cores in the same 2RU footprint

  • More Choices: the new processor comes in 4-core or 6-core options and has up to 16MB shared L3 cache

The Sun Fire x4450 is a 4-socket x64 server in 2U form factor, which makes it half the size as other 4-socket x64 servers from other tier 1 vendors. This fact saves precious data center real estate .

The Sun Fire X4450 server supports the fastest Intel Xeon processors so that customers can run their applications more quickly and efficiently while supporting more users, providing more services, or bringing their products to market sooner.

The Sun Fire x4450 Server also delivers both 32-bit and 64-bit enterprise-class computing for increased scalability of applications while not requiring instruction set changes. The Sun Fire x4450 can expand to up to 24 cores with 4 processors, 32 memory DIMM slots and 8 storage bays.

Among the other features of the Sun Fire x4450 are its hot-swappable and redundant power supplies, cooling fans and RAID-enabled disk drives. Quad integrated Intel Gigabit Ethernet ports enable outstanding network I/O performance, increased network reliability when installed in failover configurations and support teaming.

Sun Integrated Lights Out Manager (ILOM) (standard at no extra cost) enables remote management functionality, allowing administrators to access and manage the system locally or remotely. Sun Fire x4450 systems with Intel Xeon processor 7400 series are required to have ILOM, and cannot have embedded LOM. Systems with embedded LOM must be upgraded to ILOM.

Sun Fire x4450 servers can run Solaris, Linux, Windows and VMware operating systems so that customers can standardize on one hardware platform for most of the data center applications, reducing management and operational costs. This also enables consolidation of applications using Solaris Containers or VMware, which helps increase server utilization and reduce costs.
