From the Sun portfolio, the new Sun MD D20 supports systems including the Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 and M5000 servers, Sun StorageTek SL500 Modular Library, and the Sun StorageTek 9985V System.

Sun has released a new deeper rack model of the Sun Modular Datacenter (Sun MD20-versus S20 for the original configuration) which provides customers with new choices for deploying a broader spectrum of enterprise-class servers and storage in their modular datacenters. The deeper rack configuration is for customers who run larger database applications or who want to use Sun MD for back up and recovery or other business critical solutions which require larger amounts of disk and tape.

From the Sun portfolio, the new Sun MD D20 supports systems including the Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 and M5000 servers, Sun StorageTek SL500 Modular Library, and the Sun StorageTek 9985V System. Sun MD also supports a wide range of third-party equipment in both the standard and deep rack configs.

Since its official launch in January 2008, the Sun MD has been deployed by numerous global customers for a broad range of applications in high-performance computing, education, manufacturing, government, telecommunications and healthcare. The Sun MD containerized datacenter is certified for regulatory and safety compliance as well as for fire-suppression in over 50 countries world-wide. Sun MD D20, a containerized datacenter allows a global deployment of a broader range of equipment and applications.

Sun MD, widely known as Project Blackbox, is a high-density, energy-efficient datacenter configured in an enhanced 20-foot standard-size shipping container for rapid deployment. Based on a standard-size, 20-foot (6.1 meter) shipping container, Sun MD is enhanced with seven (D20) or eight (S20) high-density racks; a patent-pending, water-based cooling system; and shock absorption technology for ultimate transportability. Designed to house a payload of 19-inch rackmountable servers, storage, telecommunications, and networking equipment, Sun MD can be installed permanently or can be deployed and later repurposed and relocated.

With a 200-kW cooling capacity in only 160 square feet of space and a highly mobile form factor, Sun MD can do the same job as a typical datacenter in just 1/8th the amount of space. With its unique closed-loop water cooling system, Sun MD is more than 40 percent more energy-efficient at cooling than a typical datacenter. With high-efficiency water cooling in a small enclosed area, much less energy is consumed per compute unit than in an air conditioned datacenter. Consequently, Sun MD can help reduce CO2 emissions by up to 1459 metric tons per platform in just five years, which can help businesses meet environmental regulations.

Sun MD D20 Product highlights include

  • Has seven industry standard, 19" inch racks, each is 40RU tall.
  • Four of the racks have a usable depth of 78.1 cm while the remaining three have usable depth of 115 cm.
  • Deeper racks to support more mission-critical equipment including the Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 and M5000 servers, Sun StorageTek SL500 Modular Library and the Sun StorageTek 9985V System.
