Leveraging two years of open source development, Sun OpenDS SE 1.0 -- Sun's first commercial Directory Services offering based on the open source OpenDS Directory Services Project -- is a full Sun-licensed product with support offering including a subscription model and a first-time support offering for this next-generational set of Directory Services.
This first version, limited to core directory server capabilities, brings to the market a new core directory server entirely Java-based developed in the open source community, implementing a complete LDAP v3 compliant Directory Server, easy to install, use and manage.
Its limited footprint allow this directory to be embedded into other applications or equipment, and its rich set of APIs makes it easy to extend to add new services and increase usage scope.
The new architecture is designed to unleash unprecedented performances in both read and write, as well as to support increased horizontal and vertical scalability over time.
Sun OpenDS Standard Edition 1.0 includes:
- Easy to use installation capability
- Rich command line interface to perform all online administrative tasks such as configuration and administration
- A graphical status panel
- Replication protocol to replicate data across up to 4 servers
- Advance security and password policies
- Advanced backup and restore capabilities
Sun OpenDS Standard Edition 1.0 has some restrictions that will limit initial deployments to medium size enterprises or specific configurations. These can be found in the product documentation (Release Notes).
OpenDS is the foundation for the next generation directory product line supporting our Identity Services for the future. While this version 1.0 is not designed to be a replacement for our existing successful DSEE product line, it gives opportunity for new deployments and early adopters to leverage in a supported manner the OpenDS open source project.
