...breakthrough modular server architecture

Sun's newly released Sun Blade X8440 Server Modules feature as many as four third-generation AMD Opteron quad-core processors with integrated DDR2 memory controller and HyperTransport links, creating breakthrough modular server architecture, making them the fastest AMD Opteron quad core blade servers on the market. These blades are also the only ones offering four-socket quad-core processors with 32 DIMM slots (four per populated CPU socket). Sun Blade X8440 Server Modules are for use with the Sun Blade 8000 and 8000 P chassis and may coexist with, or replace, Sun Blade X8400, X8420, X8440 (dual-core) or X8450 server modules.

Each Sun Blade X8440 Server Module comes configured with four 8354 (2.2GHz, 75w), 8356 (2.3GHz, 75w) or 8347 HE (1.9GHz, 55w) Quad-Core processors, and supports up to 128GB of registered DDR2-667 ECC memory (256GB will be supported when 8GB DIMMs are offered), up to two SAS or SATA disks (externally accessible) hot-swap disk drive bays, six PCI Express X8 interfaces yielding up to 192Gbps I/O throughput and is qualified to run the Solaris, Linux, VMware or Windows Operating Systems.

Among the new features of the Sun Blade X8440 Server Module are:

  • The "2 CPU sockets populated" ATO configurations physically have 4 processor sockets and can be upgraded to a fully populated (4 processor) configuration via installation of a processor upgrade kit.

  • Blades are designed to fully support AMD's "Dual Dynamic Power Management" (aka split plane) technology for better efficiency and performance

  • Six PCI Express interfaces per server module via midplane, all six of which are x8 lane width yielding up to 192Gbps I/O throughput.

  • Two USB 2.0 ports; ATI ES1000 Video, VGA connector;Serial Port, DB9 connector, all front accessible

  • Hardware RAID 0, 1 with onboard controller

The Sun Blade 8000 and 8000 P Modular Systems deliver industry leading throughput and twice the investment protection of today's blade servers requiring up to 43% less power and up to one third the space of today's rackmount servers. The Sun Blade 8000 and 8000 P Modular Systems combine modular I/O with the fastest x64 processors available in 19U and 14U chassis designed to handle the demands of Enterprise and HPC-level applications while eliminating I/O bottlenecks.

Customers can utilize the Upgrade Advantage Program if interested in upgrading their current Sun or non-Sun server to the Sun Blade 8000 or 8000 P modular system or a Sun Blade X8440 Server Module. Customers can trade in their current server and get a trade in allowance, applied as a discount off the list price of a new Sun Blade 8000 or 8000 P Modular system or Sun Blade X8440 Server Module. Customers will also have the option to trade-in Sun Blade X8400, X8420 or X8450 Server Modules for the new X8440 Server Module.
