Automatic Data Migration (ADM) with ZFS

ADM, Automatic Data Migration, is an OpenSolaris HSM (hierarchical Storage Management) system for Solaris file systems. With ADM, files can be moved to archive storage (disk or tape) to free up space on primary devices. ADM will recalled data from the archive storage when needed. The process of capturing, releases and recalling data to/from archive storage is based on policies set by the administrator based on file characteristics. ADM is being built initially for ZFS to provide many of the functional characteristics of SAM-QFS.

Sun Identity Manager 8.0 Podcast

Sun has made a Podcast available that talks about Sun Identity Manager 8.0:

Configuring J4000 and ZFS in Ten Minutes

In a July 2008 article by Dominic Kay, “Configuring J4000 and ZFS in Ten Minutes”, you can see how powerful the combination of low cost JBODs and ZFS can be.

Dominic shows how easy it is have ZFS handle the manage two arrays each contain 12 x 136.72 GB disks - approximately 3.2 TB

Sun Cluster 3.2 2/08

This release of Sun Clusters add support for Oracle 11g in HA-Oracle and Oracle RAC configurations on SPARC based platforms.

It also adds support for Logical Domains in a Cluster. The Release note describes topologies, requirements and restrictions, and installation and configuration procedures for guest domains as cluster nodes

System Administrator Resources for Sun’s CoolThreads Servers

A BigAdmin System Administration Portal is now available for the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5140 and T5240 Servers.

Sun Ray Software 4 Update 3 0 - With Video Support

A Sun blogger announced that Sun Ray Software 4 Update 3 Beta is coming soon…

Java ME HP iPAQ 900 series: Sun & HP Partner

Sun ’s Engineering Services group will be delivering to HP a compiled version of Java ME for wireless handsets for the iPAQ. Sun will work with HP to implement specific feature set. Normally Java ME licensees like HP start with the code and are responsible for integration and producing a binary product for their platform.

XCP Firmware for SPARC Enterprise M4000/M5000/M8000/M9000 Servers

The latest version of the XCP firmware , XCP 1071 contains fixes for the following Change Requests:

  • 6685379 XSCF changed from XCP1050 so that console logs out from Solaris
  • 6661840 Description of setdscp/showdscp is unclear
  • 6667626 adduser man page should change the maximum user name length to 31 characters
  • ...

Jeff Cheeney, Storage facilitator, recently posted a ” Storage Community Annual Report“ in which he included these quick facts:

Gartner Vendor Rating for Sun Microsystems: Positive

Gartner has issued a new vendor rating for Sun Microsystems: “The overall vendor rating is positive”.

The Gartner definition for “positive” is "Demonstrates strength in specific areas, but execution in one or more areas may still be developing or inconsistent with other areas of performance"
