Sun has released the second model of the Sun Fire X2200 server. These M2 servers with the new High Efficiency (HE) quad core AMD Opteron processors save power draw, running at an Average CPU Power (ACP) of just 55 Watts, while offering quad core performance enhancements.
A few new features the Sun Fire X2200 introduces are new quad core Sun Fire X2200 M2 HE standard configuration, ATO (Assemble To Order) processor options and upgrade kit for dual core Sun Fire X2200 M2 servers.
However here is a side note, these ATO systems require the new X2200 M2 quad core ATO Chassis (A85-A-QC) announced on 4/29/08. If upgrading a dual core Sun Fire X2200 M2, the upgrade kit is required. All parts, tools and instructions necessary for higher efficiency and quality upgrade are provided. With the upgrade from two to four cores, customers can expect not only an increase in system performance but savings in their utility consumption.
There are a couple of options for the Sun Fire X2200 M2 when it comes to upgrading dual to quad core by using Sun’s IBB program. Customers may either:
1) Turn in a current Sun or competitive system and get 10 percent purchase of new quad core system.
2) For those customers with manpower to make their own physical upgrades, Sun offers its 2347 HE Quad Core Upgrade Kit, including all the parts, tools and instructions needed for a system upgrade. Return the old CPU and heat sinks to Sun and get 20 percent off the list price of any Sun Fire X2200 M2 Upgrade Kit.
The Sun Fire X2200 comes with a one year, next business day warranty. Also for users upgrading from dual core with the quad core Upgrade Kit, a one year HW only service uplift -- IWU-A85-SD-1H (Cat K), is offered at minimal additional cost.
The M2 server also provides users with the AMD CoolCore Technology. This reduces processor energy consumption and reduces heat as well as power draw. The Cool Core Technology does this by shutting down parts of the processor logic and memory controller when not required.
Formally known as Power Now, Independent Dynamic Core Technology is standard with the Sun Fire X2200 M2. This automatically optimizes the processor performance and power to match the compute workloads by working with the operating system. However, this feature is OS dependent and needs the enabling of PowerNow in the system BIOS. Also good to know is that the Solaris 10u5 will support Power Now. A benefit of Dynamic Core Technology is that it enables more energy efficient systems as well.
Customers interested in trying out the standard configurations of the Sun Fire X2200 M2 Quad Core Servers can enroll in Sun\'s Try and Buy program to test drive the system for a free 60 days.
