Sun has created a new Emerging Markets region to drive accelerated expansion and sales coverage across growing markets in South and Eastern Europe, Latin America, India and Greater China. The united Emerging Markets territory will be led by Denis Heraud, currently Sun's senior vice president of Asia Pacific, who will report to newly appointed Executive Vice President of Sun's Global Sales and Services organization, Peter Ryan. Ryan is assuming this leadership role effective immediately from Don Grantham, who will be leaving the company after nine years.

To accommodate the new sales region, Sun will be reorganizing its leadership chain and sales organization at the start of its fiscal year 2009, which begins in July:

  • Lionel Lim will be promoted to senior vice president, taking over leadership of the Asia Pacific sales region from Heraud

  • Cheryl Cook will be promoted to senior vice president of the North America sales region, taking over from Ryan

  • European region will remain under Alain Andreoli, senior vice president of Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA)

  • Global Sales and Services organization will combine its Systems and Storage product sales forces into one team to better align resources and address the growing market opportunity

Sun also recently promoted Lin Lee to vice president of Global Communities. Based in China, the Global Communities division will be emphasizing the management of relationships with governments, universities and NGO's across the world, specifically among the emerging economies. The globally dispersed team will be promoting Sun's long-term view on sustainable network infrastructures - ranging from open file formats and open source software to power-efficient network computing infrastructure.

"Rapidly developing and emerging economies have been some of the most assertive in embracing Sun's approach to sustainable network computing, via open source software and open document formats, along with power sensitive datacenter infrastructure," said Sun President and CEO Jonathan Schwartz. "Establishing an Emerging Markets geography as a peer to North America, Europe and Asia, will focus our resources, attention and leadership to accelerate that growth, while opening yet more indigenous opportunity for the governments, businesses and the developers looking to the network for opportunity."

Emerging markets have shown impressive growth for Sun. In its third quarter fiscal 2008 report, Sun reported a 20 percent year-over-year growth in Brazil, 30 percent year-over-year growth in India and 18 percent growth in the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe region.

"Bluntly put, we're elevating our focus on developing economies because that's where free software, and Sun's businesses, are growing fastest. Where is OpenOffice deployed in the greatest numbers? In places where saving $300 per desktop is meaningful," Schwartz wrote in his June 2nd blog entry. "No wonder those economies are so passionate about open standards - their citizenry will ultimately make them the most important decision makers in the world." [...read more...]
