All PTO configurations and X-options for the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5140 and T5240 Servers were to be generally available on April 30. These UltraSPARC T2 Plus processor-based servers are the latest in an extensive family of SPARC processors. To help users understand the variances between these processors, Tim Cook created a comparison table outlining their physical features and architecture.
Cook's chart covers:
- UltraSPARC IV+, codename Panther
- SPARC64 VI, codename Olympus-C
- UltraSPARC T1, codename Niagara
- UltraSPARC T2, codename Niagara 2
- UltraSPARC T2 Plus, codename Victoria Falls
The UltraSPARC T2 Plus processors-based servers, T5140 and T5240, are equipped with up to eight cores per processor and eight threads per core for support of up to 128 simultaneous threads per server, with 16 threads executed per clock cycle. These processors can dramatically improve throughput and utilization while using less power and dissipating less heat than conventional processor designs.
Customers interested in upgrading to these newest UltraSPARC servers can through the Upgrade Advantage Program (UAP). Sun offers the option of trading in Sun or non-Sun servers with the trade-in allowance taken as a discount from the list price of the new Sun server.
Additionally, customers can upgrading their Sun SPARC Enterprise T5140 or T5240 server by components. This means they can trade-in existing memory or disk for new higher density memory or disk and receive a trade-in allowance.
