MySQL Still Committed to Linux and LAMP
Mickos Contends Sun Interested in Offering Customers Choices

Attendees at the 2008 Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit held at the University of Texas at Austin earlier this month wanted to know whether Sun's preference for the Solaris Operating System (Solaris OS) over Linux would affect MySQL with its new ownership to Sun. According to speaker Marten Mickos, former MySQL CEO and current Sun senior VP of Databases, the answer was a resounding no.

During his presentation at the conference, Mickos was asked about Sun's commitment to the integrated open source stack LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP). InformationWeek's Charles Babcock reported Mickos responding, without hesitation, "The commitment is complete. We are still committed. If we are not committed, than any one of you can take the MySQL code and fork it to make a new MySQL product, which I am sure you would do."

Babcock noted that the crowd of about 300, which consisted primarily of Linux developers, users and vendors, questioned Mickos about Sun's Linux strategy and the degree of freedom the MySQL group will have inside of Sun. Mickos responded that Sun is interested in growing with the Web and feels it is important to offer customers choices of technologies rather than just Sun-only ones.
