Two Script Articles by Victor Feng for Solaris OS Check for Used Space and Automate System Checks
BigAdmin contributor Victor Feng has submitted two community tech tips that offer sys admins a script to check for used space in Solaris Operating System (Solaris OS) file systems and one that automates system checks. The latter has been updated this year from a previous posting done in 2007.
Feng provides a checkfsspace script which will check whether the used space for both UFS and ZFS file systems exceeds a warning threshold. If the used space exceeds the threshold, the script sends a warning message to a specified email address. If ZFS is not available, such as in a system that runs the Solaris 9 OS, then the script will just skip checking ZFS.
The article supplies the script source code and a demonstration of both UFS and ZFS file systems.
If you're a systems administrator who is not using checkdisk script and other automated scripts for system checks, then take some time to read this updated tech tip that explains how to use three different scripts for automating system checks on systems running the Solaris 8, 9, and/or 10 OS.
Each one of the following scripts is important for keeping a system up and running smoothly and should be run on a daily basis, recommends Feng. The scripts are:
checkmessages: Run this script daily using cron to check logs.
checkpatch: This script uses the Patch Check Advanced (PCA) tool to look for newly available security patches. It has been updated as of February 2008.
checkdisk: Used to check for predictive disk failure, this script helps system administrators ensure they are aware of disk failure prediction messages.
