In December, Sun Microsystems Federal's Jim Laurent created a comparison chart between the Solaris 10 Operating System (Solaris OS) and Red Hat EL 5, highlighting important aspects of the two open source development models. At the time, he invited readers' comments, stating he "...tried to be as complete as possible in collecting the relevant RHEL 5 information, (but) there may be items that I missed."
Well, the community didn't disappoint and did send in suggestions. The chart has been updated with new information on the operating systems, and Microsoft Windows 2003 Datacenter Edition has been added as an additional OS to compare.
"All three of these operating systems run and are sold and supported by Sun on our X64 based servers featuring Intel or AMD processors," Laurent comments in his blog.
Bill Vass, Sun Microsystems Federal President and Sun COO, adds, "We recognize that customer choice is important, and although we will continue to invest in Open Source Linux and Solaris (along with other open source products like MySQL), you will see us continue to work more and more closely with Microsoft to grow their footprint on our hardware and provide seamless integration between the world of open source and Microsoft."
Take a look at the chart, and send in feedback. "Like all good open source input," writes Vass, "we will continue to update the information on this feature chart as new information comes in, our goal is to make sure the information is factual and correct."
