We wanted a Java technology-based solution that could address our demanding, and growing, requirements for predictability and low-latency

Sun Java Real-Time System Software Wins Reuters
Early Access Preview of Version 2.1 for Red Hat, Suse Linux Offered to SDN Members

The Sun Java Real-Time System (RTS) will be helping Reuters, PLC address latency and unpredictable temporal performance of Java applications in the development and deployment of market-facing services.

"Reuters Group has a wide range of systems that use Java technology as part of the solution to deliver core services to our customers," commented Andrew Cunningham, global head of Transactions Platform Group, Sales & Trading Division at Reuters. "We wanted a Java technology-based solution that could address our demanding, and growing, requirements for predictability and low-latency, as well as enable us to leverage our existing code base and Java technology expertise."

The Sun Java RTS provides a high-level development platform offering absolute execution predictability in applications. It enables hard, soft, and non-real-time functions to be combined in one system while keeping critical latencies as low as 20 microseconds, Sun reports.

Developers can precisely determine when time-critical functions should be executed and keep them insulated from garbage collection pauses with the Sun Java RTS, which can utilize new memory models and allow processes to be differentiated based on importance.

The Sun Java RTS with the Solaris Operating System (Solaris OS) is capable of running on over 900 standard x86 and SPARC technology platforms. It can leverage the real-time capabilities of the Solaris 10 OS, which also enables Sun Java RTS applications to take advantage of multi-core and multi-processor environments. This Sun software solution is compliant with the Real-Time Specification for Java.

An upcoming version of Sun Java RTS will extend its features to real-time Linux distributions from Red Hat and Novell. Sun does have an early access preview version of its Java Real-Time System 2.1 for Red Hat and Suse Linux that it posted last week as a free download for members of the Sun Developer Network.

"JRTS 2.1 will work with both Red Hat and Novell's real-time enterprise Linux distributions, and should be available in final form sometime after April," writes Alex Handy with SD Times. "By that time, Sun should also have completed work on around 70 DTrace probes built specifically for the JRTS."

Commenting on the customer win, Jeet Kaul, vice president, Client Software Group at Sun, said, "Reuters has long been recognized as a market leader in the financial markets information and technology space, and it's no surprise that they recognize the power and value that the Sun Java Real-Time System can bring to their business."
