When a pre-installed VMware image of OpenSolaris is made available for general download, Christopher Kampmeier's blog Installing OpenSolaris Developer Preview on VMware Workstation 6 and Ubuntu 7.10 will become redundant but, until then, it is a handy how-to that lets users gain the use of this tool.
Kampmeier shows readers how to boot up the OpenSolaris Developer Preview 1 live CD and install the OS into a virtual machine (VM) using VMware Workstation 6.0.2 build-59824 running on Ubuntu 7.10 with bridged networking.
There are nine steps in Kampmeier's process, which are:
- 1) Get the OpenSolaris Developer Preview
- 2) Address VMware Wireless Networking Issue
- 3) Create a New Virtual Machine
- 4) Apply Network Interface Workaround
- 5) Power on the Virtual Machine
- 6) Install OpenSolaris from the Live CD
- 7) Reboot Into OpenSolaris
- 8) Time for a Snapshot
- 9) Install VMware Tools
The author notes VMware's suggestion to install the VMware Tools in all guest operating systems along with what he labels the unfortunate number of issues that arise when one attempts to install the tools in the OpenSolaris Developer Preview 1 release. He notes, too, that although the first issue has a workaround,he has not yet discovered a workaround for the key mapping problem.
