Laptop Security Breaches Highlight Benefits of Sun Ray Thin Clients Offers a Better Way to Access, Protect and Secure Critical Data
Security breaches in the form of lost and stolen laptops makes the point that critical data needs to be secured in innovative ways for continued business safety and productivity. In a recent government survey, 83 percent of federal chief information security officer (CISO) report an increase in laptop use by federal employees and the issue of laptop security of increased importance.
Bill Vass, president and COO of Sun Microsystems Federal, has the solution to their concerns - the Sun Ray thin client.
"For those of you who do not know, a Sun Ray is essentially a stateless, 'dummy terminal' that allows employees to connect to a central server with their files, data, etc. The data remains securely behind network walls," he writes in his weblog. "...the beauty of Sun Ray is that the security and access policy is centrally controlled & built into the network (eliminating the human error inherent in traditional laptops). Employees can access anything anywhere, but the data does not travel ON anything anywhere!"
Besides security, Vass points out the speed, efficiency and ease of use he has found with his own Sun Ray.
"...it's fast, REALLY fast, just walk up to any Sun Ray, insert your badge, put in your PIN, and within 3 seconds your desktop is encrypted and delivered to that device in the state you last accessed it. The cursor is still blinking on the email you were typing....no VPNing, no booting, no lugging a device around, no upgraded/changing desktop hardware all the time... just simple, fast, secure work," he writes. "It's the type of freedom, simplicity, and security thats hard to find in other IT environments!"
