The new UltraSPARC T2 servers [18776] along with the Sun xVM infrastructure [18756] are the "ultimate virtualization combo," says Marc Hamilton, vice president of Solaris Marketing at Sun. "Imagine virtualizing your environment with 640 hardware threads running on ten Sun Blade T6320 blades in a compact 10 rack units - only 17.5 inches of space."

In his October 9th blog., Hamilton points out several important updates to the Sun xVM product family. Namely:

  • Solaris Containers: The ability to run Solaris 8 Operating System (Solaris OS) applications (Project Etude, see [18633]) as well as the ability to run Linux applications.

  • LDoms Hypervisor: Updated to support more Solaris domains (guest OS instances); a new Management Information Base (MIB), enabling Sun xVM Ops Center and third party management tools to monitor and manage LDoms; and an LDoms Browser user interface. The updated LDoms (now available with Solaris 10 OS) will be a key technology in the new Sun xVM Server product line, Hamilton says.

  • Newly revamped Container Manager Tool: For the Sun xVM Ops Center, the tool will allow containers to be created for Solaris 8 OS and Linux applications. It also provides container migration capabilities.

"When run on the Sun Blade T6320, each Solaris 8 container can have its own IP instance, extending the blazing fast performance of the built-in 10 Gbit networking to your older Solaris 8 applications, not to mention your current Solaris 10 apps. With Sun xVM technology, your Solaris 8 applications can also benefit from previously Solaris 10 only features like Predictive Self-Healing and ZFS," Hamilton explained.

The Solaris 8 container software is targeted for an October 22nd availability date.

"Coupled with Sun xVM technology," Hamilton says, "these new servers make the ultimate virtualization combo." [...read more...]
