ZFS Snapshot to Amazon S3
Using a Storage Utility vs Building One Yourself

This version of the implementation is going to take the "simple is elegant" route

-- Paul Monday

Paul Monday provides an example of the planning process he went through when considering using a storage utility or building his own. He selected the ZFS file system and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for a storage utility.

Amazon S3 is a Web service from Amazon.com that providers developers with a way to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web.

Following the "simple is elegant" rule, Monday used the built-in capabilities of ZFS and moved data between his files system and Amazon S3. He lists the steps for the reverse flow of the process to restoring the files system from Amazon S3 back to ZFS. Retrieving and billing are also detailed. (It only costed him nine cents!)
