Sun has been given an award from the office of United States Senator Barbara Boxer for reducing energy usage at Sun data centers. The "Conservation Champion Award" was presented on August 14, 2007, at the Sun Agnews campus in Santa Clara, CA. (For a brief and interesting history of the Agnew campus, see the NPS site.)
Senator Boxer received a tour by Sun Chief Technology Officer Greg Papadopoulos who talked about the ways in which Sun is cutting its energy costs, asserting that the data center design helps Sun cut its energy costs in half.
Senator Boxer established this award to recognize individuals and organizations that are working to make positive changes to conserve the environment. Other winners of the Conservation Champion Award includes the Tuolumne River Regional Park partners in Modesto, CA. The Joint Powers Authority of the County of Stanislaus and the cities of Modesto and Ceres have partnered with the Tuolumne River Trust and exhibited smart planning in creating a diversity of natural areas and experiences - all of which are designed to give people the chance to experience nature and the wonders of the natural world.
Sun is making its business "green" by committing to a 20 percent reduction of its U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over 2002 levels by 2012. A table online lists the energy use of Sun campuses.
